Remember that poem “Footprints”? I do, and a couple of years ago I came to despise it. When everything is good and life is moving on pretty much as hoped and expected, it’s easy to believe that you are not alone…that you are “blessed”. However, everyone at some point in their life will come to that proverbial crossroads…that intensely insane desert experience where nothing makes sense and everything you thought you knew or believed in becomes the subject of genuine, contemplative questioning. Under Moses’ leadership, the Israelites experienced it. So did Elijah. And Jesus. If they were not able to avoid such a period, then you too are not exempt. You must believe that you will never truly be alone in that period of time, but you just might begin to wonder if that “Footprints” poem was just a joke...because despite well-intentioned platitudes, reality can sometimes speak multitudes on its own.
