This song was written at the same time as “Absentee” and with the same heart-felt, gut-wrenching thoughts in mind. If you know the story of Jacob and his encounter with the angel in the Biblical book of Genesis, you know that these lyrics are a twist on that story, and the classic hymn “Amazing Grace” is also given a one-eighty. My experiences “in the desert” a couple of years ago brought me to a place I never thought I would find myself, but I am concurrently surprised and grateful. When you go through the worst storms and the darkest nights, and you manage to keep your footing, you will find yourself profoundly different than the person you were when the experience began. The trial by fire was beyond excruciating, but with four and a half decades of life experience behind me, I can honestly say it made me a much better person, father, husband, son, brother, and friend. Crazy as it sounds to hear myself say this, the trial by fire was a blessing, and it all happened as it had to.
lyrics
I wrestled with an angel
And told him, “Bless me now.”
He said he had to go, then beat me to the ground
And still he blessed me not
Amazing trials, How dissonant the sound
That broke a good man as I
I once was home but now I’m lost
Had sight but now I’m blind
